Vladimir Duthiers reports from a 4th grade classroom as the students & teacher demonstrate a live active shooter drill observed by some of the students’ parents for the first time. As the Supervising Producer of the ongoing “School Matters” series, I knew we would have to address school shootings in some way. From being in the field in the immediate days after a shooting to putting together remembrance pieces for the victims, I’ve produced far too many shootings and wanted to do something to break through the complacency. To remind people that this is an everyday reality for kids. So, I came up with the idea to show an active shooter drill live in an actual classroom with actual students.
